One Moment

8/22/22

There is a mist in the valley as the sun comes up this morning. That mist that starts white, with some shades of grey, is suddenly tinged with orange. Now whole sections are blazing in shafts of rosy light. It’s only a moment before orange softens to gold and the fog dissipates and blends into the day.

Only one moment.

If I’d been turned away or still lying on my pillow or in the shower or reading or getting out cream for my coffee, I’d have missed it. But, I was looking. I saw.

Not all distractions are bad, but they are distractions. You can’t be doing and really noticing at the same time.

But, one must often be doing! We wouldn’t eat or have clean clothes or serve others or get anything done if we simply sat and looked our life away.

Yet, of course, if we don’t sometimes stop doing, our life will pass by in a wisp of mist and fog, and we will miss the radiance of a momentary shaft of light.
